For the month of January, 1-B students will be learning about non-fiction features, the elements of non-fiction books that authors include to help readers better understand and access the text. To make this topic come alive, 1-B students will write their own non-fiction books using all the features we study this month.
The first thing the students learned about non-fiction books is that they are written by people who are experts on the topic. 1-B students are working together to become experts on whales! Whales will be the topic of their non-fiction books.
To begin our study of whales the class learned about what makes a whale a whale. They have been exploring the similarities and differences between the approximate 78 species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises.
The cetologists are off to a fantastic start!
